・外国の批判に傷つけられやすい国民性。外国人からの風評に過敏に反応し、動揺しやすい。

・諸外国を一つの「外」に見立て、また常に１国VS１国で見る。海外の国々を「ひとつ」に
単純化するため、互いが互いに対立する複数国の中でバランスをとるという考え方が不得意
である。「全体」VS「日本」という図式の中で、自意識過剰な反応や被害妄想になりやすい。

・戦争中は非常に攻撃的で強硬だったのに、戦後はお人好しなまでに従順でおとなしくなるなど、
外国に対するコンプレックスが大きく、外国人は特殊であり、同国人へとは違った反応をする。

・自国の連続性という意識が希薄で、歴史はあまり重んじられず、変わり身が早い。

・日常の生活術として「交渉術」を必要としない国民性で、幼い頃から交渉術を学習する諸外国と
違い、外交交渉はいつも後手に回り、交渉下手さが著しい。

・年一回おさい銭を放るのと葬式仏教だけで宗教を片付ける現実主義。来世という考え方が理解
できない。

・清貧の思想。質素を好み、「穢れ」を取り払う「浄化」嗜好から清潔を心がける。たたみマットの
清潔さは明治の欧州各国使節団を驚かせた。"
